There are many different ways to set goals and hundreds of websites that can help you do so. Let me get you started by sharing the basics of goal setting. There are short-term and long-term goals. Most people consider long-term goals to be anything greater than five years down the road. Which than makes short-term goals anything less than that or daily, weekly and monthly goals. We all do really well (most of the time) with daily goals such as cutting the grass, doing laundry or completing the college paper we’ve been putting off. The hard part is creating short-term goals that will allow us to accomplish long-term goals such as getting a college degree, landing the vice president’s job, traveling to China for a month or purchasing a new home.
The secret is to start with a long-term goal and write it down. Next work backwards and break that goal down into smaller tasks that have you working monthly, weekly, and daily towards your long-term goal. Be realistic about your short-term goals as these are the nuts and bolts of making it to the long-term finish line. Once you set your goals, be sure to check in and make sure you are on track. It’s okay to adjust them as life is constantly changing. Reward yourself for accomplishing short-term goals with those things that make you happy. And remember life is about the journey not the destination so ENJOY!!
